G-Man will be the first major biography of former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover to be published in more than two decades. The book is under contract with Viking, scheduled for publication in 2017.
As head of the FBI from 1924 through his death in 1972, Hoover was the most influential federal appointee of the 20th century, a confidant, counselor, and adversary to eight U.S. presidents. Though better known today for his sexual peccadilloes and his abuses of civil liberties, during his lifetime Hoover was a hero to millions of Americans, at once a conservative icon and an architect of the modern American state. G-Man will situate Hoover’s story within a sweeping reinterpretation of American politics in the 20th century, a new look for the post-Cold War generation at one of the most important but least understood figures in American political life.
